Fundamental Glossary / Cash Flow Metrics

Financing Cash Flow

Cash from lenders and shareholders, and cash returned to them.

Formula

Inflows: new borrowings and share issues. Outflows: repayments, interest in some standards, dividends, and buybacks.

What it means

Financing cash flow shows how the balance sheet was funded. A young company often has inflows. A mature company often has outflows as it pays dividends and reduces debt.

Persistent financing inflows that fund negative operating cash flow are a firm living on fresh capital.

How to read it

Match the financing inflow to the use. Debt raised to build a productive asset is a plan. Debt raised to pay the dividend is a distribution of borrowed money.

What to watch

Lease principal payments may sit in financing rather than operating cash flow. That choice lifts operating cash flow relative to older presentations. Compare years on one standard.
