Fundamental Glossary / Debt & Financial Stability
Total Liabilities
Every recognised obligation: borrowings, payables, provisions, deferred tax, and other liabilities.
Formula
Current liabilities + non-current liabilities. Total assets - equity gives the same total when the balance sheet balances.
What it means
Total liabilities are broader than debt. A company can have modest borrowings and large total liabilities because of payables, advances, or provisions.
Equity holders should know the full claim that ranks ahead of them.
How to read it
Liabilities that grow in line with the business, such as payables on higher sales, are operating. Liabilities that grow because of unpaid interest or disputed taxes are not.
What to watch
The total omits contingent liabilities that have not been recognised. Add the note if you want the full exposure.
This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
