Interim Dividend

A dividend declared during the year, before the full-year results and usually before the annual general meeting.

Formula

Declared by the board from estimated profits, and later included in the full-year DPS.

What it means

Indian companies often pay an interim dividend after quarterly or half-yearly results, and a final dividend after the year is closed.

An interim dividend is a real cash payment. It is not a proposal waiting for shareholder approval in the way a final dividend often is.

How to read it

A new interim dividend, or a higher one, is a signal of the board's confidence in the year. It is still subject to how the rest of the year turns out.

What to watch

Boards can skip or cut an interim dividend without the ceremony of a final dividend. Do not treat last year's interim as a contractual coupon.
