Exceptional Items

Material items of income or expense that are unusual in size or nature and are therefore shown separately so the reader can see the underlying result.

Formula

Presented separately on the face of the Indian P&L or in the notes. They are inside profit, not below it.

What it means

A large restructuring cost, a factory sale, or a one-time settlement may be labelled exceptional. The label asks you not to treat it as the run-rate.

Management's "adjusted profit" usually removes these items. Sometimes it removes them when they are costs and keeps them when they are gains.

How to read it

Compute your own underlying profit with a consistent rule: remove items that truly will not recur, and keep items that have recurred for years under rotating labels.

What to watch

If exceptional costs appear most years, they are a cost of the business. Adding them back every year overstates earning power.

This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
