Diluted EPS

Earnings per share after assuming that dilutive options, warrants, and convertibles have become shares.

Formula

Adjusted profit / diluted weighted average shares. The treasury-stock method is the usual way to count options.

What it means

Diluted EPS answers: if every instrument that can cheaply turn into a share did so, how much profit is left per share. It stops basic EPS from ignoring claims that already exist.

Only dilutive instruments are included. An option whose exercise price is above the share price is out of the money and is left out of the count.

How to read it

When diluted EPS is close to basic EPS, future conversion is a small issue. A wide gap means a meaningful slice of the company has already been promised to someone else.

What to watch

Convertible accounting can add the saved after-tax interest back to profit while adding the new shares. Read both sides of that adjustment. Employee options expensed in profit are not a second full cost, but the share count still dilutes.
