Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership

Promoter Holding

The percentage of shares held by the promoter and promoter group.

Formula

Promoter shares / total shares. Disclosed quarterly in the Indian shareholding pattern.

What it means

Promoters are the controlling shareholders identified under SEBI rules, including the promoter group. The holding is the stake they still own.

A high holding aligns control with ownership. A steady decline can be planned dilution from growth capital, or a slow exit.

How to read it

Read the trend across several quarters, and read it beside pledging. A high holding that is heavily pledged is not the same as a high holding that is free.

What to watch

Reclassification into or out of the promoter group changes the percentage without a market trade. Check the footnotes when the number jumps.
