Hollow Candlestick Chart
A candle colouring where an up close is hollow and a down close is filled, sometimes with a second colour for the prior close.
Teaching sketch. It shows the shape, not a live quote and not a trade signal.
Definition
Hollow candlesticks follow the same OHLC geometry. The fill carries the message: a hollow body means the close is above the open, and a filled body means the close is below the open. Some platforms also paint the candle green or red by whether the close is above the prior close, so fill and colour answer two different questions.
How it works
Read the legend before you read the chart. "Hollow" is not a different market. It is a display of the open-to-close direction.
How to identify it
Bodies that are outlines rather than solid blocks when the close is above the open, on an otherwise normal candle chart.
Bullish reading
A hollow candle closing near its high is the same bullish close as a green candle on another platform. Compare it with the prior bar before calling it strength.
Bearish reading
A filled candle closing near its low is a weak close. A hollow candle can still be bearish if it closes well under the prior close. Check which rule the colour uses.
Common mistakes
Assuming hollow always means "up on the day." If colour tracks the prior close and fill tracks the open, a candle can be hollow and red.
Limitations
The pattern library does not change. Only the ink does. A strategy written for green and red must be translated, not copied.
This note explains the term. A sketch shows the shape of the idea. Neither is a recommendation, a signal, or a comment on any security. Indicator settings and exchange conventions differ. Check the live chart and the contract specification before you use a number.
