Optimal Trade Entry (OTE)

A pullback zone between the 62 and 79 percent retracements of the dealing swing, used as a deep entry location.

Formula

On the dealing range from swing low to swing high, the OTE zone is the band from the 0.62 retracement to the 0.79 retracement. From the high, that is high - 0.62 x range down to high - 0.79 x range. The figures are the familiar 61.8 and 78.6 Fibonacci ratios, rounded in the SMC teaching.

Definition

Optimal trade entry is a branded name for a deep Fibonacci retracement zone. The teaching says that in an uptrend you want to buy pullbacks that reach between 62 and 79 percent of the dealing range, where the stop under the low is relatively tight and the target back at the high pays well. "Optimal" is an adjective the method gave itself. A 62 to 79 percent pullback is simply a deep pullback. It has the usual property of deep pullbacks: better risk-to-reward if it holds, and a higher chance that the trend has already ended. The zone does not remove that trade-off. It names it.

How it works

Measure the same dealing range you used for premium and discount. The OTE band sits inside discount, which is why the two ideas are often stacked. They are not independent. A 62 percent retracement is below the midpoint by construction. Wait for price to trade into the band and then require a trigger, a sweep of a minor low, a rejection candle, a lower-timeframe shift. Buying the top edge of the band because it was touched is buying a line. The invalidation is a close through the swing low that defined the range. If that distance is large, the position size has to be small. The zone does not grant a tight stop.

How traders use it

Use OTE as the deep-pullback case of a Fibonacci retracement, with the rules from that page. Prefer it when a real level, a prior swing, a volume node, an order block, sits inside the band. Skip it when the band is empty geometry. In a strong trend that only retraces 38 percent, OTE will not be offered. That is not a malfunction. Your rule is for deep pullbacks, and this trend is not having one. Take the continuation another way or leave it.

Common mistakes

Treating the word optimal as a tested claim that this band has the best expectancy. It has a better reward multiple when it works and it fails by breaking the swing. Also moving the swing anchors so that OTE covers the current price. And stacking OTE, discount, and the 61.8 fib as three confluences. They are one measurement said three times.

Limitations

OTE inherits every limit of Fibonacci retracements and adds a marketing word. It has no volume test and no time test. A pullback can sit in the zone and grind through it. Deep pullbacks in a volatility spike will run to the low and through it without respecting 79 percent. The stop belongs at the structure, and the structure may be far from the pretty band.
