Swing Trading

Holding for a move that lasts more than a session and less than a long-term investment, typically days to a few weeks.

Definition

Swing trading aims at the next swing on the daily chart, not at the next minute and not at a multi-year holding. Positions are often held overnight. The setup is usually a daily level, a pullback, a breakout, or a reversal at a weekly level, with the stop beyond a daily swing. Because you hold overnight, gap risk is part of the method rather than an accident. The advantage is time. You can wait for a daily close, you pay the spread less often, and one good swing pays for several small losses. The disadvantage is that you cannot flatten at 3:30 and be done. The position lives through whatever the next session opens with.

How it works

Work from the daily chart for the setup and the weekly chart for the bias. Enter on the daily close or on a planned intraday trigger inside the daily level, and be consistent about which. A stop under the daily swing will look wide compared with an intraday stop. Size from that width. Targets are the next daily level, a measured swing, or a trail of daily higher lows. Check earnings, policy dates, and expiries before you hold. A swing trade into an earnings gap is not a swing trade. It is an event bet wearing a chart.

How traders use it

Keep the number of open swings small enough that you can say what each one is for. Review them once a day, not once a bar. The method dies when you manage a daily idea on a one-minute chart and get shaken out by noise you promised to ignore. Use alerts at the daily stop and the daily target. If you cannot leave the screen, you are day trading a swing position, and you will harvest the worst parts of both: overnight risk plus intraday fidgeting.

Common mistakes

Calling an intraday trade a swing after it goes against you and you decide to hold. Also placing a daily stop and then exiting at a small intraday loss because the bar looks scary. And ignoring the calendar. A clean daily flag through an earnings date is not clean.

Limitations

Overnight gaps make the realised loss larger than the daily stop. Size as if the gap can happen, or hedge, or do not hold that name. Swing trading also concentrates you in whatever regime the daily trend is in. A month of chop will stop out a swing system repeatedly. That is the regime telling you to slow down, not a reason to drop to a lower timeframe and revenge the same idea.
