Change of Character (CHoCH)
The first break of structure against the current trend, a possible change of side.
Teaching sketch. It shows the shape, not a live quote and not a trade signal.
Definition
Change of character is the first break against the trend. In an uptrend the last higher low breaks. In a downtrend the last lower high breaks. The market has done something it was not doing. It is an early reversal clue, not a completed new trend. A later break in the new direction is what confirms the new structure. This entry is shared with the market-structure category.
How to identify it
You must know the trend first. Then mark the most recent higher low or lower high. A CHoCH is a trade through that point, against the prior swings. A break of a minor low inside a pullback may be too small. Use the swing that defined the trend.
Bullish reading
A bullish CHoCH is a downtrend printing a break of its last lower high. It says rallies are no longer failing at the old place. Wait for a higher low if you want confirmation. Taking the first break is earlier and wrong more often.
Bearish reading
A bearish CHoCH is an uptrend losing its last higher low. It says the pullback was deeper than the trend allows. Confirmation is a later lower high. Many bearish CHoCH patterns are just deep pullbacks that get bought.
Common mistakes
Treating CHoCH as a guaranteed reversal and skipping the stop. The name means "character," not "completed trend." Also marking a CHoCH on every candle that dips under a prior candle low.
Limitations
The first break against a strong trend fails often. CHoCH is a place to pay attention and to reduce the old-trend bet, not a place to flip full size without a level.
