Primary Trend
The largest swing direction, the tide rather than the waves.
Teaching sketch. It shows the shape, not a live quote and not a trade signal.
Definition
In Dow theory the primary trend is the major movement, lasting months to years, bull or bear. Secondary reactions run against it for weeks to months. Daily noise is minor. The word is still used without the Dow timetable: the primary trend is the highest-timeframe direction you are willing to call a trend.
How to identify it
Step up a timeframe until the swings you care about are the main ones. A weekly series of higher highs is a primary uptrend even while the hourly chart is falling. Write down which chart is primary so you do not change it mid-trade.
How traders use it
Trade in the direction of the primary trend, and use the lower timeframe for entries. A setup against the primary trend is a countertrend trade and should be sized and held like one.
Common mistakes
Promoting an hourly trend to "primary" because it is the chart you like to watch.
Limitations
Primary trends turn last. Waiting for the weekly structure to reverse means giving back a large part of the move. That is the cost of the filter, not a bug.
This note explains the term. A sketch shows the shape of the idea. Neither is a recommendation, a signal, or a comment on any security. Indicator settings and exchange conventions differ. Check the live chart and the contract specification before you use a number.
