Contingent Liabilities

Possible obligations that depend on a future event, disclosed when an outflow is not yet probable or not reliably measurable.

Formula

They are usually in the notes, not as a recorded liability, until the probability crosses the recognition line.

What it means

A tax demand under appeal, a guarantee given for a subsidiary, or a lawsuit is a contingent liability while the outcome is uncertain.

Under Indian schedule formats, contingent liabilities and commitments are a standard note. Guarantees, letters of credit, and disputed taxes are the lines to read.

How to read it

Compare the total with net worth and with profit. A dispute that is a fraction of one quarter's profit is noise. One that is a large share of equity is a thesis risk.

What to watch

Management may describe the chance of loss as remote. That is an opinion. Repeated "remote" items that later become provisions are a pattern, not a footnote.

This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
