Fundamental Glossary / Financial Statements
Liabilities
Present obligations that will require an outflow of economic resources.
Formula
Liabilities sit on the balance sheet opposite assets. Current liabilities are due inside a year or the operating cycle. The rest are non-current.
What it means
A liability is not only a bank loan. It includes payables, taxes due, customer advances, lease obligations, and provisions for warranties or lawsuits.
Some obligations are contractual and certain. Provisions are estimated. Contingent liabilities may not be on the balance sheet at all.
How to read it
Rising liabilities are fine when they fund assets that earn more than the cost of the liability. They are a problem when they fund losses or dividends the business did not earn.
What to watch
Off-balance-sheet items, guarantees, and take-or-pay contracts can be as binding as a loan. The commitments note is part of the liability picture.
This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
