Fundamental Glossary / Indian Stock Market-Specific Fundamentals
SME IPO
An initial public offering on the SME platform of NSE (Emerge) or BSE (SME), for smaller companies, with a lighter issue-size framework and different trading rules.
Formula
Disclosure through a prospectus, a merchant banker, and post-listing obligations that are scaled relative to the mainboard. Migration to the mainboard has its own thresholds.
What it means
The SME platform exists so smaller firms can list without the full mainboard scale. Liquidity is often thin, lots are larger, and the investor set is restricted in ways the exchange specifies.
The fundamental work is the same, and the disclosure history is shorter. That combination raises the risk, it does not change the questions.
How to read it
Treat a thin SME listing as a company you may not be able to exit. The quality of the offer document and the use of proceeds matter more when there is no deep market to correct a mistake quickly.
What to watch
A listing on the SME platform is not a credit rating and not a SEBI endorsement of the business. It is a compliance status.
This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
