Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership
Institutional Shareholding
The combined stake of institutions such as mutual funds, insurers, banks, FPIs, and alternative investment funds.
Formula
Sum of the institutional categories in the shareholding pattern / total shares.
What it means
Institutions are professional holders. A rising institutional stake means regulated pools of capital are willing to own the name. It is not a verdict on valuation.
The category includes domestic and foreign institutions. Split them when the question is about foreign flows versus domestic savings.
How to read it
Broad institutional ownership can improve liquidity and scrutiny. A single institution with a very large stake is a concentration, and its exit is a supply event.
What to watch
Index funds buy because the stock entered an index, not because an analyst finished a model. Separate passive holding from active holding when you can.
