Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership
FPI Holding
The stake held by foreign portfolio investors registered with SEBI.
Formula
FPI shares / total shares, as disclosed in the shareholding pattern.
What it means
An FPI is a foreign entity registered to invest in Indian securities under the portfolio route, as distinct from foreign direct investment in an unlisted or strategic stake.
FPI holding is the current name for what older tables called FII holding. Use the label the filing uses for that quarter.
How to read it
Changes in FPI holding are one window on foreign demand. A single quarter's change can be an index rebalance. Several quarters of accumulation or exit are the pattern.
What to watch
Not all foreign ownership is FPI. A foreign promoter, a foreign direct investor, or a depository receipt holder may sit in a different line. Foreign ownership is the wider term.
This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
