Time Cycles

Recurring intervals, measured in bars or calendar days, that traders watch for swings to rhyme.

Definition

A time cycle is a claim that highs or lows tend to recur at a roughly fixed interval. The interval might be measured from history, the dominant swing length of this market, or taken from a calendar, such as expiry weeks, fiscal quarters, or the 20-day rebalance rhythm of a fund. Gann used fixed counts, including divisions of the year and Fibonacci bar counts. Cycle tools in charting software fit a sine wave to the past. All of these are time hypotheses. None of them specify the direction of the next turn by themselves. A cycle, even a real one, drifts, damps, and breaks when the cause of the rhythm goes away.

How it works

The disciplined version does not start with a famous number. Measure the last several swings of the same degree, in bars, and notice whether they cluster. If weekly lows in this index have been 14 to 18 weeks apart for three repetitions, that range is your cycle hypothesis. Project the next window and write it down. If the low arrives in the window, the hypothesis survives one more test. It is not proven. If it misses, the cycle has changed or it was never there. Software that fits a cycle to the whole history will always find one. Ask it what it predicted before the last two turns, not how well it passes through them after the fit.

How traders use it

Use a cycle window to become alert, not to enter. Inside the window, trade only a price setup you would have taken anyway: a level, a reversal bar, a break of structure. Outside the window, do not ignore a clear setup because the cycle is "not due." Time is the weakest of the three classic dimensions, after price and volume, precisely because a bar count does not tell you who is trapped or where the level is. Calendar effects that have a mechanism, option expiry, index rebalance, a known data release, deserve more respect than a fitted sine wave, and they still do not tell you the sign of the move.

Common mistakes

Counting from a low to a low that you selected because the count was a number you like. Also combining Gann counts, Fibonacci counts, and a fitted cycle, then calling a week "high confluence" because one of them lands there. And holding a losing trade because the cycle date has not arrived. Time is not a stop. Price is.

Limitations

Financial cycles are not physics. The sample of major highs in any one market is small, so a 40-week story may rest on a handful of points. Regime changes, a new policy regime, a change in who the marginal trader is, break old rhythms without notice. A cycle tool has no volume and no price target. Used as a reminder to look for a price signal, it is harmless. Used as the signal, it is a calendar dressed up as analysis.

This note explains the term. A sketch shows the shape of the idea. Neither is a recommendation, a signal, or a comment on any security. Indicator settings and exchange conventions differ. Check the live chart and the contract specification before you use a number.
