Internal Structure

The swings inside the most recent leg, as opposed to the major swings that bound the trend.

Definition

Internal structure is the sequence of smaller highs and lows inside the current swing. If the daily trend is up, the internal structure is what the hourly swings are doing inside the latest daily leg. A break of internal structure is a change in that smaller sequence. It can be the start of a pullback, the start of a reversal, or noise. It is not automatically a change in the external trend. The distinction exists so that a minor break does not get promoted into a new bias. Traders who flip their direction on every internal break are trading the smaller timeframe while thinking they have a higher-timeframe signal.

How it works

Pick the two timeframes and keep them. External structure lives on the higher one. Internal structure lives inside the last external leg. Mark internal swings only until they break the external swing. When an internal break fails and the external trend resumes, the internal break was a pullback. When the internal break is followed by a break of the external swing, you have a real change of character on the timeframe that matters. The order is the analysis. Skipping it and calling every broken minor low a reversal is how internal structure gets misused.

How traders use it

Use internal structure to time entries in the direction of the external trend. A pullback that breaks a minor high in the direction of the daily uptrend is an internal shift back to bullish, a place to look for a long, as long as the daily higher low is intact. Use an internal break against the trend as a warning to tighten, not as a new short, until the external low actually fails. This is multi-timeframe analysis with a rule about which break counts.

Common mistakes

Redefining internal and external after the move so that you were always on the right degree of structure. Also trading internal breaks on a timeframe you do not actually execute. And drawing so many internal swings that a break is always available in both directions.

Limitations

The boundary between internal and external is a judgement about swing degree. Two traders will split the same chart differently. Write the rule in swings you can count, "the last two daily highs are external, anything inside the latest daily leg is internal," or the distinction will drift toward the trade you want. Internal structure also lags the bar. The break is confirmed after part of the pullback is already gone.
