TRIX Indicator

The one-bar percent change of a triple-smoothed exponential moving average.

Teaching sketch. It shows the shape, not a live quote and not a trade signal.

Formula

EMA1 = EMA(close). EMA2 = EMA(EMA1). EMA3 = EMA(EMA2), all of length N, often 15. TRIX = 100 x (EMA3 - prior EMA3) / prior EMA3. A signal line is an EMA of TRIX.

Definition

TRIX, from Jack Hutson, takes the rate of change of an EMA that has been smoothed three times. The triple smooth is there to strip the cycle Hutson wanted out and to leave the trend's slope. A cross of zero is a turn in that smoothed slope. TRIX is slow on purpose. A 15-period triple EMA does not react to one bar, which is why traders use it for swings rather than for scalps.

How it works

Positive TRIX means the triple EMA is rising. The histogram version, TRIX minus a signal line, is a cross system on that slow slope. Divergence between price highs and TRIX highs says the smoothed slope is weaker even if price is still up. Confirm with structure. The lag is large enough that divergence can persist.

Bullish reading

A cross of TRIX up through zero is the bullish regime change in this tool. It will arrive after the price turn. Use it to confirm a swing that structure already suggested, or to stay with it, not to buy the low.

Bearish reading

A cross down through zero is the bearish regime change, with the same lag. In a range, zero crosses still chop, just more slowly. Slow chops are still losses if you take all of them.

Common mistakes

Shortening N until TRIX jitters, which throws away the only reason to triple-smooth. Also calling a TRIX turn a price target. It is a slope of an average.

Limitations

Anything triple-smoothed will round the turns off. The V-bottoms and news spikes that dominate real trading are exactly what TRIX is designed to ignore. Do not ask it to see them.

This note explains the term. A sketch shows the shape of the idea. Neither is a recommendation, a signal, or a comment on any security. Indicator settings and exchange conventions differ. Check the live chart and the contract specification before you use a number.
