Ease of Movement (EOM)

How easily price is moving, by comparing the midpoint change with the volume required to produce the range.

Teaching sketch. It shows the shape, not a live quote and not a trade signal.

Formula

Distance = (high + low) / 2 - prior (high + low) / 2. Box ratio = (volume / scale) / (high - low). EOM = distance / box ratio. The result is usually smoothed with a 14-period SMA. The scale divisor is a platform constant, often 10,000 or 100,000,000, so the line is readable. Richard Arms developed the measure.

Definition

Ease of movement asks whether price travelled a long way on little volume. A wide bar with light volume produces a large EOM. A wide bar with huge volume produces a small one, because the box ratio says a lot of volume was needed to build that range. The sign follows the midpoint. Positive EOM is upward movement that came easily. The raw value is noisy, so the smoothed line is what most charts show. The scale factor means you cannot compare the number across platforms without checking the divisor.

How it works

A smoothed EOM above zero says recent midpoints have been rising more easily than they have been falling. Crosses of zero are the simple signal and they will chop in a range. The more useful read is a price push that EOM does not confirm: price up, ease of movement flat, meaning the advance took a lot of volume per unit of range. That is effort with modest result.

Bullish reading

Positive and rising EOM during an advance says the market is travelling up without needing ever-heavier volume. A turn back above zero after a pullback can time a continuation if price structure agrees. Do not buy the zero cross against a falling higher-timeframe trend.

Bearish reading

Negative EOM says downward midpoints are the ones coming easily. A rally on very small EOM, price up only because enormous volume pushed a short distance, is a weak advance in this framework. Confirm with the bars. The oscillator can be negative simply because you chose a noisy scale.

Common mistakes

Comparing EOM readings between two platforms or two symbols as if the units matched. Also trading every zero cross. Arms's measure is a colour on the move, not a standalone system.

Limitations

The box ratio divides by the range, so a doji or a bad tick makes the value unstable. Platforms guard this differently. And "easy" movement is not a reason the move must continue. Thin markets move easily in both directions, including against you.

This note explains the term. A sketch shows the shape of the idea. Neither is a recommendation, a signal, or a comment on any security. Indicator settings and exchange conventions differ. Check the live chart and the contract specification before you use a number.
