Volume Indicators & Analysis
How much traded, at which prices, and whether the effort agrees with the move. 22 topics.
Volume
The number of shares, contracts, or units that changed hands during a bar.
Average Volume
The typical volume over a chosen window, the baseline a single bar is compared with.
Volume Moving Average
A moving average plotted on volume, so spikes stand out against a smoothed baseline.
On Balance Volume (OBV)
A running total that adds volume on up closes and subtracts volume on down closes.
Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP)
The average price of the session so far, weighted by how much traded at each price.
Anchored VWAP
A VWAP whose cumulative sum starts at a bar you choose, instead of at the session open.
Accumulation/Distribution Line
A cumulative total that weights each bar's volume by where the close sat in the high-low range.
Chaikin Money Flow (CMF)
The N-bar sum of volume weighted by close location, divided by the N-bar sum of volume.
Volume Price Trend (VPT)
A cumulative line that adds volume scaled by the bar's percentage price change.
Ease of Movement (EOM)
How easily price is moving, by comparing the midpoint change with the volume required to produce the range.
Negative Volume Index (NVI)
A cumulative index that changes only on bars where volume fell, associated with the behaviour of quieter sessions.
Positive Volume Index (PVI)
A cumulative index that changes only on bars where volume rose.
Volume Oscillator
The difference between a short and a long moving average of volume, expressed in volume or in percent.
Relative Volume (RVOL)
Current volume divided by the volume that is typical for this bar, often for this time of day.
Volume Profile
A horizontal histogram of how much volume traded at each price over a chosen window.
Point of Control (POC)
The price level with the most volume in a volume profile.
Value Area High (VAH)
The upper boundary of the price band that contains the bulk of a profile's volume, usually 70 percent.
Value Area Low (VAL)
The lower boundary of the price band that contains the bulk of a profile's volume, usually 70 percent.
High Volume Node (HVN)
A local peak on the volume profile, a price where trade clustered relative to the prices around it.
Low Volume Node (LVN)
A local trough on the volume profile, a price where relatively little trade took place.
Delta Volume
The difference between volume traded at the ask and volume traded at the bid, a print-level estimate of aggressive buying versus selling.
Cumulative Volume Delta (CVD)
The running sum of delta volume, used to see whether aggressive trades have been lifting the offer or hitting the bid over time.
