Low Volume Node (LVN)

A local trough on the volume profile, a price where relatively little trade took place.

Definition

A low volume node is a thin patch in the profile. Price passed through, or printed there only briefly, and the market did not build acceptance. On a return, price often travels quickly across the thin zone until it reaches the next high volume node. That is the practical use: LVNs are fast areas, not places to expect balance. They are also where stops cluster in some narratives. You do not need that story. The profile fact is enough. Little trade happened here, so there is less prior agreement to slow the tape.

How it works

LVNs form between two balances, in the middle of a single trend leg, and around gaps if the profile has no prints inside the gap. A gap with no trade is the extreme LVN. When price re-enters, the first HVN on the other side is the next place the tape is likely to change behaviour. "Likely" is historical tendency. A new balance can form inside an old LVN the moment volume starts printing there. Then it is no longer low volume.

How traders use it

If you are targeting a move, an LVN in the way is a reason to expect a quicker trip, not a reason to fade the first touch. If you are placing a stop, a stop inside an LVN can be skipped through. Stops just beyond the next HVN are uglier in points and more honest about where the auction might pause. Do not enter a fresh position in the middle of an LVN and hope for a quiet fill. The zone is thin by definition.

Common mistakes

Treating an LVN as a magnet. The magnet idea belongs more to high-volume prices. Thin zones are what price cuts across. Also calling a low node on a profile that simply has no data, a feed gap, an LVN. Missing data is not market structure.

Limitations

A trough is only low relative to its neighbours. In a generally busy profile a "low" node may still be a lot of volume. Look at the scale. And once price trades through and builds a new node, your old LVN map is stale. Rebuild the profile for the window you still care about.
