Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership
Shareholding Pattern
The quarterly disclosure of who owns the company, by category.
Formula
Filed with the exchanges in a standard format: promoter and promoter group, public shareholders by institution type, and non-institutions, plus pledging and locked-in shares.
What it means
The shareholding pattern is the primary source for promoter holding, institutional holding, public holding, and pledging. It is filed for each quarter.
Changes of more than a threshold by a single holder are also disclosed as the rules require, between the quarterly patterns.
How to read it
Read two or three quarters side by side. One quarter is a snapshot. The direction of promoter, FPI, and mutual fund lines is the information.
What to watch
The pattern does not list every retail name. It lists categories, and it lists individual holders only when a disclosure threshold is crossed. Absence from the named list does not mean absence from the register.
This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
