Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership
Government Holding
The stake held by the central government, state governments, or government-controlled entities when they are disclosed as such.
Formula
Government shares / total shares.
What it means
In public-sector companies the government is often the promoter. The holding then determines control, the dividend expectation, and the chance of a further disinvestment.
A government financial institution holding a small stake in a private company is an investment, not promoter control. Read the category.
How to read it
A stated disinvestment plan is supply of stock over time. It is not, by itself, a view on the business. The use of the company as an instrument of policy is a separate fundamental risk.
What to watch
Government-controlled entities sometimes sit outside the line labelled government. Add the promoter-group entities if you want the full state-linked stake.
