Fibonacci Channel
Parallel lines spaced at Fibonacci ratios of a channel width, built from a trendline and a parallel.
Teaching sketch. It shows the shape, not a live quote and not a trade signal.
Definition
A Fibonacci channel starts with a trendline and a parallel, the same two lines as an ordinary channel, and then adds further parallels that divide or extend the channel width by Fibonacci ratios. A 0.618 line sits inside the channel. A 1.618 line sits outside it, one channel-width beyond the far side, scaled by that ratio. The tool is a way to mark intermediate diagonals and outside objectives once you believe the channel is real. If the base channel is badly drawn, every ratio of it is badly drawn too.
How it works
Draw the base trendline on two clear touches and the parallel on the opposite extreme, exactly as you would for a normal channel. Add at most the mid-channel, the 0.618, and one extension. Price riding the upper half of a rising channel is a strong trend. A break of the lower line invalidates this channel. The extension lines are targets for a throw-over, the brief push beyond the channel that sometimes ends a trend. They are not a new channel. A throw-over that does not return is a breakout, and the old channel should be retired.
How traders use it
Use the inner ratios to describe where a pullback is inside a trend you have already channelled. Use an outer ratio as a place to tighten a trail if price spikes through the channel on a mature move. Take the trade from the channel and the trend, not from the fact that a 1.618 parallel exists. Anyone can add parallels. The work is the two anchor lines.
Common mistakes
Fitting the base lines so that a Fibonacci parallel hits a chosen high. That reverses the logic. Also combining a Fibonacci channel with a Fibonacci fan on the same swing and counting both as confluence. You have multiplied one slope.
Limitations
Channels are sensitive to which two touches you honour. A channel that needs to be redrawn every few bars is not a channel. Fibonacci spacing does not fix a bad basic line. And like all diagonals, the price of the line at the right edge moves when you change the anchor by one bar.
This note explains the term. A sketch shows the shape of the idea. Neither is a recommendation, a signal, or a comment on any security. Indicator settings and exchange conventions differ. Check the live chart and the contract specification before you use a number.
