Fundamental Glossary / Indian Stock Market-Specific Fundamentals

BSE

BSE Limited, formerly the Bombay Stock Exchange, Asia's oldest stock exchange still in operation.

Formula

Sensex, of 30 stocks, is its flagship index. BSE lists a very large number of companies, including many that barely trade.

What it means

BSE is the other nationwide venue for equities. Companies typically list on both NSE and BSE. Some smaller companies are listed only on BSE.

Sensex is the older headline index. Nifty 50 is the more traded one. Both are used for the market-wide circuit breaker.

How to read it

For a large stock, BSE and NSE prices track each other. For a thinly listed BSE-only stock, the last traded price can be stale and the spread wide. Liquidity is part of the fundamental risk.

What to watch

An old BSE code series and a new symbol can confuse a data pull. Confirm the ISIN before you join two history files.
