Fundamental Glossary / Indian Stock Market-Specific Fundamentals
SEBI
The Securities and Exchange Board of India, the regulator of the securities market.
Formula
Established under the SEBI Act. It regulates issuers, intermediaries, mutual funds, FPIs, research analysts, and the exchanges.
What it means
SEBI writes the rules on disclosures, takeovers, insider trading, IPOs, buybacks, and research-analyst registration. The filings an analyst reads exist because a SEBI regulation required them.
Enforcement orders, settlement orders, and adjudication orders are public. A pending SEBI matter against a company or its promoter is a fundamental fact.
How to read it
A clean compliance record does not make a business cheap or expensive. A live enforcement action on the accounts or on disclosure is a reason to doubt the numbers until it is resolved.
What to watch
Regulations change. A description of a SEBI rule should be tied to the circular, not remembered from a decade-old article. This glossary states the framework in plain language and is not legal advice.
This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
