Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership

DII Holding

The stake held by domestic institutional investors: Indian mutual funds, insurers, banks, and similar institutions.

Formula

DII shares / total shares.

What it means

DIIs are the domestic counterpart to FPIs. Mutual funds and insurance companies are usually the largest pieces.

A market in which DIIs buy while FPIs sell can still rise, because the domestic pool has become large enough to matter.

How to read it

Rising DII holding is domestic savings entering the stock. It can stabilise the register. It can also mean the stock has become an index heavyweight that every fund must own.

What to watch

DII is an analytical grouping, not always a single line in the filing. Add the domestic institutional lines rather than mixing in retail or promoter holdings.

This note explains the term. It is not a research recommendation, a target price, or a comment on any security. Ratios and regulatory thresholds change; use the latest filing or circular for a live figure.
