Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership

Mutual Fund Holding

The stake held by mutual fund schemes.

Formula

Mutual fund shares / total shares. Sometimes disclosed scheme by scheme when a holding crosses a threshold.

What it means

Mutual funds are a subset of DII holding. They matter because monthly flow data and portfolio disclosures show what they bought.

A stock held by many schemes is widely owned by retail investors indirectly. A stock held by one scheme is a single manager's position.

How to read it

Rising mutual fund holding adds a domestic bid. If the stock is a large part of one scheme, that scheme's redemptions become a seller you can see in advance only roughly.

What to watch

Different schemes of the same fund house can buy and sell independently. The aggregate hides that. Also, arbitrage and index schemes are not high-conviction active bets.
