Fundamental Glossary / Shareholding & Ownership
Retail Shareholding
The stake held by individual public shareholders, as distinct from institutions and promoters.
Formula
Retail or individual public shares / total shares, using the category in the shareholding pattern.
What it means
Retail shareholders are individuals. A large retail base can mean a popular stock and, sometimes, a noisier register.
Indian disclosures split the public into institutions and non-institutions, and non-institutions into holders above and below a nominal threshold.
How to read it
A surge in retail holding into a sharp price rise is often late participation. A rise during a long flat period is a different, quieter accumulation.
What to watch
Small lots do not move the price the way a block does, but a wide retail base can still sell together after a shock. Liquidity, not the headcount, decides the impact.
